In 1983 the privatesector and the Municipal Administrative Office, having had relized the high potential for tourism of Changwat Krabi had co-operated to construct a small airporton public land which was completed in 1986 serving the air transport by 18-seated aircraft of Sahakol Air company( now Bangkok Airway Co., Ltd.)
This was not successful, thus, the charge of airport development up to standard was rested on the then Development of Aviation so that the travel Changwat Krabi would be more convenient and rapid resulting in the promotion of tourism of Changwat Krabi as well as the more flexible growth of business in the Changwat.
The Government passed a resolution assigning the Developartment of Avaition ( Now Development of Civil Aviation) to make a survay, design, buy more land and construct the Airport in 1993 till the completion and opening for commercial service on 10 july 1999. the Airport components were as follows: .
*Asphaltic concrete runwat with a length of 2,100 meters and width of 45 meters with runway shoulders of 7.50 meters.
*2 asphaltic concrete taxi way with length of 320 meters and width of 23 meters and a length of 430 meters and width of 23 meters.
*Concrete apron with a length of 200 meters and width of 85 meters to accomodate 2 Boeing 737 -400s, ARTs and 2 helicopters simultaneously.
*Runway, Taxiways and apron edge lights
*approach lights
*Precision Approach path indicator System (PAPI)
*2- storeyed passenger terminal with an area of 7,000 square meters to cope with 300 passenger both arrival and departure simultaneously as well as all the facilities.
